Shakespeare had a great influence on Japanese modern literature.
Among other things, “Hamlet” was variously adapted by many young literatus encompassing their own feeling of youth.
What did those Japanese “Hamlets” think of Ophelia?
The image of a girl with long hair sinking beneath the river filled with flowers became worldly known by Millet’s painting. By collaging the source of the image derived from the text, we bring to you on stage the Japanese “Ophelias” who have disappeared into water, and produce a drama about girls, time and death.
