The play of E. Jelinek (the writer of the novel "The Piano Teacher", which was made into movie/Nobel Prize in Literature 2004), who illustrates various social issues grotesquely and claims to be the most hated writer, is to be performed for the first time in Japan. The text is collaged from quoted words and texts related to German nation and nationalism by well-known German writers.
Such deep connection between words and themes makes it almost impossible to translate this play into another language. Port B is known for its unique performances which, using multimedia, cross over the borders among various genres of art. This time, through the process of adapting this play to "Japan" with its thematic question of complex relation between nation and language, Port B faces the problems of "mother tongue" and "translation", and thus seeks for a new theatrical language.
