"Beckett Live" has been performing Samuel Beckett's later plays. This time, we present "Ashioto (Footfalls/Pas)", the piece the author described as a 'pacing play'. As the name suggests, in the performance the audience is presented with a woman perpetually walking. The sound of her footsteps and a voice from the darkness -- these are the two central elements that form the entire play. The woman paces up and down a strip of light downstage, taking nine steps each time. Within the repetition of this movement, she speaks to the darkness. Then, from there, a voice emerges. The voice appears to be that of her mother, but we are unable to see the speaker. They might be a mother and daughter. The dialogue between the voice and the woman, and the fragmented stories they tell, progress in and out of the rhythm of the footsteps. Occasionally, there is a faint sound of a chime. Therefore, in addition to being a 'pacing play', this is also a 'listening play'. The original play was first performed in 1976, when Beckett was 70 years old.
